How to use

Using the instrument is simple. At first, the surfaces of the prism and the cover are washed with distilled water and carefully wiped (This cleaning is done after each use of the instrument).

Calibration

Before taking the measurement, adjust the instrument by placing 1-2 drops of distilled water at a temperature of 20 °C, on the surface of the prism covered with the movable cover.

Looking at the field of view in the light, the line that separates the bright from the dark field must coincide with the 0 of the scale, if it does not coincide then by turning the adjusting screw it is arranged to coincide.

Measurement

After adjusting the instrument, 1-2 drops of water sample are placed on the surface of the prism and the field of view is observed in the light.

The reading is done when, by moving the microscrew of the instrument, the dividing line that separates the light from the dark field appears clearly.

The number on the scale corresponding to the dividing line gives the % salinity content in the water. The scale is from 0-100ppt (0-10%) with bars per 1 ppt.
